ST. JOHN’S, Antigua — The Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Services has issued an urgent high surf warning for Antigua, Barbuda, Anguilla and the British Virgin Islands as dangerous sea conditions impact the region.

The warning, issued at 11 a.m. Tuesday, said rising long-period north swells are generating life-threatening surf and dangerous rip currents, particularly along northern and north-facing coastlines.

The alert remains in effect until midnight Tuesday for Antigua and until Wednesday midday for Anguilla, Barbuda and the British Virgin Islands.

Forecasters said seas are ranging between 2.4 and 3.4 meters (8 to 11 feet), occasionally reaching near 4 meters (13 feet). Breaking waves are expected to exceed 3.1 meters (10 feet) and could be twice the swell height in some areas. Swell periods are between 11 and 13 seconds.

The Meteorological Service warned of dangerous rip currents, coastal flooding and beach erosion, sea spray affecting low-lying roads and navigation hazards in harbors. There is also potential for damage to reefs and desalination operations. Officials cautioned that even strong swimmers face a serious risk to life.

Residents and visitors are urged not to enter waters along affected coastlines and to avoid rocks, jetties and other coastal structures. Only sheltered beaches, mainly along southern and eastern shores, should be considered, and extreme caution is advised.

If caught in a rip current, officials advise swimmers to remain calm, float, avoid swimming against the current, and swim parallel to shore if possible before signaling for help.

The Meteorological Service said it will continue to monitor conditions and urged the public to stay informed through local media and official updates.
