University of the West Indies (UWI) Five Islands Campus valedictorian Kahtalia Valentine has urged the graduating class of 2026 to embrace change, act with integrity and use their education to become leaders in their communities.

Valentine, who earned a Bachelor of Science in Management Studies with a concentration in Entrepreneurship, graduating with first-class honours, delivered the valedictory address during Saturday’s graduation ceremony in Antigua and Barbuda.

She challenged graduates to rethink what it means to be prepared for an uncertain future, arguing that adaptability is more important than having every stage of life planned.

“Readiness is not about certainty, it is about adaptability. And adaptability is not just a skill, it is our identity,” she told the gathering.

Reflecting on her academic journey, Valentine recalled graduating from Antigua State College in 2019 believing her formal education had ended.

However, she later reconsidered that decision and applied to university in 2023, opening a new chapter in her academic development.

“What once felt like an ending became a new beginning,” she said, describing adaptability as the bridge between uncertainty and opportunity.

Valentine outlined five principles she encouraged graduates to follow: anticipate change, discover opportunities, advocate for others, perform with integrity and take the lead.

She also reflected on the challenges of university life, including demanding coursework, group assignments and the pressure of maintaining academic performance.

The valedictorian credited lecturers, classmates and university programmes with helping students develop confidence, resilience and leadership skills.

She highlighted the importance of collaboration, saying students learned that asking for assistance was a strength rather than a weakness.

“Success came not from isolation, but from shared effort,” Valentine said.

Addressing the growing influence of artificial intelligence, she stressed the importance of clear thinking, responsible technology use and strong academic values.

She pointed to Antigua and Barbuda’s work with the Pan American Health Organization to integrate artificial intelligence into healthcare as an example of how adaptability extends beyond the classroom.

Valentine said graduates must be prepared to use emerging technologies responsibly while helping their communities navigate change.

However, she cautioned that adaptability alone was insufficient without purpose and integrity.

“Success without values is empty,” she declared.

She thanked lecturers, university staff, families and employers for supporting the graduates throughout their studies.

Closing her address, Valentine encouraged her classmates to carry the principles they developed at UWI into their professional and personal lives.

“We are the class of 2026, built to adapt and ready to lead,” she said.
