Antigua and Barbuda is marking the 52nd anniversary of the devastating October 8, 1974, earthquake, which damaged homes, public buildings, historic landmarks and critical infrastructure across the country.

The National Office of Disaster Services (NODS) commemorated the anniversary Thursday, recalling one of the most significant earthquakes in the nation’s history and highlighting the importance of disaster preparedness.

The earthquake caused widespread structural damage and left several people injured. Historic photographs shared by NODS show damaged buildings, including collapsed sections of homes and damage to the historic St. John’s Cathedral.

In its anniversary message, NODS reminded residents that while earthquakes cannot be prevented, their impact can be reduced through proper planning and preparation.

The agency encouraged households to secure their surroundings, prepare emergency kits, follow official information and establish family emergency plans.

Residents were also reminded to follow the internationally recommended safety procedure of “Drop, Cover and Hold On” during an earthquake.

NODS invited people who experienced the 1974 earthquake, or who heard accounts from relatives and friends, to share their memories of the disaster.

The anniversary serves as a reminder of Antigua and Barbuda’s vulnerability to seismic activity and the importance of maintaining public awareness and emergency readiness.

“Remember. Prepare. Stay Ready,” the agency said.
