Air quality across Antigua and Barbuda has deteriorated to unhealthy levels as the country experiences its 22nd surge of Saharan dust for 2026, according to the Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Services.

In an air quality bulletin issued at 2:45 p.m. Tuesday, the Met Office placed the country at Alert Level IV , with the Air Quality Index ranging from 151 to 170.

The unhealthy conditions, caused by elevated concentrations of particulate matter PM2.5 and PM10 associated with the Saharan dust, are expected to persist until later Tuesday night before easing to moderate levels by Wednesday.

The Met Office said the overall health risk is medium, but warned that sensitive groups should prepare for possible health effects.

People with respiratory or heart disease, including asthma, as well as the elderly and children, face a greater risk of more serious health effects. People with allergies and those susceptible to eye and skin irritation may also be affected.

The bulletin warned that the conditions could aggravate heart or lung disease and increase respiratory effects among the general population.

Active children and adults and people with heart or respiratory conditions are being advised to limit time outdoors and avoid outdoor activity. Others should avoid prolonged exertion.

Residents are also encouraged to keep windows and doors closed as much as possible and to wear a face mask capable of filtering PM2.5 particles if they must go outside.

The Met Office advised anyone experiencing medical difficulties to seek medical attention and consult a physician for further guidance.
