Antigua and Barbuda is grappling with a surge in vehicle thefts, with several incidents reported in recent weeks across the island.
The latest victim is the Lewis family of Villa, whose black RAV4, registration A6889, was stolen from Central Street on Sunday night. Surveillance footage captured the theft in progress.
Just weeks earlier, a Five Islands resident was carjacked at gunpoint near the G-Spot nightclub on Independence Avenue. The black Honda Fit taken in that incident remains missing.
Reports suggest some stolen vehicles are abandoned, while others may be stripped for parts or used in further crimes. A resident of Swetes Village also recently appealed for help locating a missing white SsangYong Musso.
Even former law enforcement officials have not been spared, with one ex-superintendent reportedly losing their vehicle along with important documents and cash.
Police have warned that thefts are occurring both at night and in broad daylight. They are urging residents not to leave valuables or documents in vehicles, to always lock their cars, and to consider alarm systems for added protection.
As investigations continue, officials stress that community vigilance is key to curbing the growing trend.
