Antigua and Barbuda will honour calypso legend Sir Mclean Emmanuel, known as King Short Shirt, by renaming Anchorage Road after him.

The announcement was made by Cabinet Spokesperson Maurice Merchant during Thursday’s post-Cabinet press briefing. A timeline for the renaming has not yet been set.

King Short Shirt is celebrated as one of Antigua’s most successful calypsonians, with seven Road March titles, 15 local Calypso Monarch crowns, and seven regional calypso wins. His 1976 hit “Tourist Leggo” caused a stir at Trinidad’s Carnival, prompting authorities there to ban foreign tunes from the Road March competition.

Later in his career, he also produced gospel music. King Short Shirt has received numerous honours, including a knighthood in 2002, an honorary Doctor of Letters from UWI Five Islands in 2023, and a Lifetime Achievement Award at the inaugural Antigua and Barbuda National Music Awards.
