The Cabinet of Antigua and Barbuda has formally approved a strategic partnership between The University of the West Indies Five Islands Campus and The UWIFIC and the UWI Mona Campus Faculty of Law in Jamaica, paving the way for the full delivery of the Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree in Antigua and Barbuda.

The announcement was made during Cabinet’s press briefing last Friday by Maurice Merchant, Director General of Communications in the Prime Minister’s Office. Merchant stated that this landmark proposal will enable Antiguans and Barbudans and other OECS students to access the complete LLB degree program on the island.

“The degree will be offered under a joint academic structure explicitly designed to uphold the same rigorous academic standards currently offered at the Mona Campus. Under the approved arrangement, the LLB offered at Five Islands will officially be the Mona Campus LLB,” he stated.

The collaboration establishes a clear division of responsibilities to ensure quality and effective program management. The UWI Mona Campus will provide curriculum oversight, quality assurance, and academic governance. In contrast, The UWIFIC will be responsible for managing the day-to-day program delivery, which includes crucial aspects such as faculty recruitment, classroom administration, and student support services.

Merchant also underscored the substantial financial benefits this local delivery will provide to students and their families.

“Pursuing the LLB program at UWI Five Islands is estimated to save students and their families approximately US$105,000. This figure is based on a comparison to the cost of pursuing the same degree at either the Mona or Cave Hill campuses.”

The first group of students for this newly approved LLB program is expected to begin enrolling in September 2026.
