Randy Baltimore emerged victorious in the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP) primary election to select a new caretaker for the St Phillip’s North constituency.

Baltimore secured a resounding 424 votes out of the 658 cast, winning by a wide margin over rivals Robin Yearwood Jr – son of the area’s current MP Sir Robin Yearwood – Dr Oswald Thomas, and Telly Cornelius.

The primary, held at the Nelvie N Gore Primary School on Thursday evening, saw a strong turnout with hundreds of constituents lining up between 4pm and 8pm to cast their votes.

Many stayed late into the night to await the results, which were met with eruptions of cheers and celebration as Baltimore’s lead held strong after the counting of each ballot box.

In his post-victory remarks, an elated Baltimore expressed his gratitude for the support and turnout.

“I’m very, very, very happy,” he said of those who voted for him. “It’s just for me to go now and to unite everyone so that we can move on together.”

Baltimore outlined his vision for the constituency, which includes community development, infrastructure development, expanded educational facilities and scholarships.

He also emphasised his intention to work closely with the other candidates to bring the community together.

“What my plans are as well is to work along with the other candidates,” he said. “They did a very good job, and so that we can pull everyone together and move forward as one.”

The atmosphere at the primary was lively, with ABLP figures like Senator Clement Antonio, Executive Secretary of the Prime Minister’s Entrepreneurial Development Fund Caleb Gardiner, and several ministers present to witness the proceedings.

As the final count was confirmed, Minister Chet Greene introduced Baltimore as the new St Phillip’s North caretaker to resounding applause.

Fellow MPs Sir Steadroy Benjamin and Melford Nicholas joined Greene on stage amidst chants and singing from the jubilant crowd.

Baltimore will eventually replace ABLP stalwart Sir Robin Yearwood Sr, who leaves big shoes to fill after holding the seat for almost five decades without ever losing a general election.

There have been recent concerns about Sir Robin’s health. Cabinet notes released Thursday stated that “Sir Robin Yearwood is well” and will join his colleagues in Parliament on July 18.
