The United Progressive Party (UPP) staged a picket outside Prime Minister Gaston Browne’s office this morning, protesting proposed vehicle license fee hikes.
Despite a lower-than-expected turnout, Opposition Leader Jamale Pringle, former UPP leader Harold Lovell, and St. Mary’s South representative participated.
Pringle criticized the lack of consultation, arguing that residents cannot afford additional taxes, while Lovell stated he was there in solidarity.
Over the weekend, Prime Minister Browne clarified that the Cabinet is considering a flat $100 annual increase and will assess the cc-rating of affected vehicles.
Efforts will be made to ease the impact on bus and taxi operators, with SUVs and heavy-duty vehicles facing a proposed 40% fee hike. The matter will be discussed in Cabinet next Wednesday before reaching Parliament’s Lower House.
