Utilities Minister Melford Nicholas has announced that the government will ramp up infrastructure work in Barbuda to support ongoing development projects.

Speaking on Pointe FM, Nicholas said he plans to spend about a week on the island to assess the energy needs, noting the current solar plant has “reached the top of its utility.” He said a new energy grid is needed to supply power to upcoming developments near the new port and commercial district.

Plans also include repurposing the old airport and advancing a housing project at Louie Hill—both requiring upgrades to energy, water, and telecom systems.

“Some work is going to be required in Barbuda over the next 18 months, and we’ve got to get in there early,” Nicholas said.

The government says the push is part of its commitment to Barbuda’s development.
