LETTER: Misogyny Exposed

Dear ANR,Social media has been rife as stories of what happened between men and women in what would normally be private settings have come to the fore.

Many comments have been made as a popular and engaged couple has had the glassy beauty of their relationship shattered as a young lady shared that she too would have gotten in on the relationship.

While criticisms and comments on the situation arose, it was most unfortunate that a person who holds a position at a local media house decided to make a comment that was the most disrespectful about the alleged other woman- suggesting that she is young, dumb and full of what rhymes with dumb.

However, the young lady was able to show that this man would have also been pursuing her, and she turned him down. While I don’t have a personal grievance with relationships with wide age gaps provided that both parties are adults, this man had to have known WHILE he was speaking to her that she was young. Her youth clearly was not a reason for him to go against trying to get her attention. When exactly did she appear to be dumb to him? Did her level of intelligence matter when he was trying to make a move on her?

This level of hatred for a woman for simply being rejected shows how fragile some men in our society are, and the need for fathers to be in homes. I understand that the man who decided to make that comment would have lost his father at a young age, so maybe he needed to be mentored on how to be a man because his endless posts on social media suggest that he is deeply broken and in need of validation, like a lot of men in our society.

Amid all of the madness on social media, this shows how thinly veiled misogyny is within our country where a man could have avoided speaking on a young lady, but decided to say possibly the nastiest thing about her because his little, delicate feelings were hurt. It also calls into question the code of conduct media house employees are expected to adhere to when a man who is supposed to hold a position of authority IN MEDIA can act so recklessly on social media… it’s baffling.

Anything really goes in Antigua because had that person been anywhere else in the world, they would have been fired with immediate effect and their hopes of being credible in media would have been destroyed.

This letter is not meant to be a “men are evil” letter but to expose that even some men who would try to create the facade that they care for women would only do so if their own interest of getting into bed with women are met, if not, they show their true colours. There are great men out there in Antigua.

There are men in Antigua who are committed to their families, running businesses, and making a difference in real life and this cuts back on the time they have to be acting up on social media.Let us know the difference and call out the misogynists as they appear.
