An Air Canada flight bound for Toronto was forced to make an emergency landing at V.C. Bird International Airport on Monday after developing a mechanical issue shortly after departure.
Flight AC1833, operated by an Airbus A319, departed Antigua for Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) when the pilots reported a technical problem. The crew declared an emergency and requested clearance to return to Antigua.
The aircraft circled briefly to burn off fuel before making a safe landing at V.C. Bird International. Emergency services were on standby, but the aircraft touched down without incident.
No injuries were reported among passengers or crew.
Authorities have not yet confirmed the exact nature of the mechanical fault. Air Canada has not issued a statement, but the incident is expected to prompt an internal review.
The Airbus A319 is a short- to medium-haul aircraft widely used in North America and the Caribbean.
