The National Hurricane Center is monitoring a new tropical disturbance in the central Atlantic Ocean for possible development over the coming days.

The NHC’s seven-day outlook issued Sunday morning shows an area of disturbed weather several hundred miles west-southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands, with a low chance — less than 40% — of tropical cyclone formation during the next seven days.

The system is expected to move generally west-northwestward across the tropical Atlantic. It is currently far east of the Caribbean and has not developed into a tropical depression or named storm.

The disturbance marks a change from Saturday, when the NHC said tropical cyclone formation was not expected anywhere in the Atlantic basin during the following seven days.

There is no immediate threat to Antigua and Barbuda, based on the outlook, and it remains too early to determine whether the system could eventually affect the northeastern Caribbean. Residents should continue monitoring forecasts as the system moves across the Atlantic.
