Dear editor,
We’ve all seen the videos. Security cameras just dormantly capturing footage of a person committing a crime.
People stealthily breaking into people’s homes in broad daylight.
Some time ago, there was a video of multiple men in and out of a person’s bedroom.
Imagine if someone came home during that time.
More recently, a man pushed down the door of an apartment unit.
As a person who lives alone, I could only imagine the terror and helplessness that I’d feel if someone is breaking down my door, knowing I won’t be able to get help before my life and property are in danger.
Can someone suggest what defense a single woman would have as a man breaks into her home? She should get close to him with a knife and hope for the best?
Should law- abiding citizens be forced to bargain with criminals who trespass onto their property?
Hope that a person who clearly has no regard for their rights will be merciful, and do as little damage as possible during their attack?
Keep their fingers crossed that they won’t be sexually assaulted?
I know having a gun is not a sure way to protect yourself, but it presents a fighting chance. I think law- abiding Antiguans should be able to stand their ground and protect their lives and property. I’m not saying guardrails shouldn’t be in place, but it shouldn’t be so difficult.
If needs be, law- abiding individuals should have the legal arsenal to as Kamla Persad Bisssessar has said, “Empty the whole clip.”
