A senior Marriott team is expected to visit Antigua and Barbuda next week to examine investment opportunities at Jolly Beach and other properties, Prime Minister Gaston Browne says.

Speaking Saturday on the Browne and Browne Show, Browne said Marriott is among several major international hotel groups that have approached the government about potential investments.

“I think Marriott is coming next week,” Browne said. “They’re bringing a high-powered team here to look at Jolly Beach and other investments.”

The prime minister said the government is also seeking to connect international investors with local families and businesses that own beachfront land suitable for development.

He said the Edwards family owns a beach next to Hawksbill that could be presented to Marriott representatives if the property is available.

Browne said Iberostar and Club Med have also expressed interest in Jolly Beach, while another investor has proposed converting the resort into a Ritz-Carlton.

The government submitted a counterproposal to that investor Friday and expects to determine by next week whether an agreement can be reached.
