Tensions ran high at the High Court after a man was found guilty of unlawful sexual intercourse with a 14-year-old girl who has a learning disability.

Family members of Dequan Yearwood had to be removed from the courtroom following the 8–1 jury verdict. One relative confronted a juror outside court, prompting a police report over threatening behaviour.

Yearwood was sentenced to two years in prison by Justice Tunde Bakre. The offence carries a maximum penalty of 10 years.

The incident occurred in January 2022. The girl, who is developmentally delayed by about three years, was found in Yearwood’s apartment. Police said she was adjusting her clothing when they arrived.
