A 25-year-old man has been sentenced to six months in prison after defaulting on court-ordered payments tied to his conviction for sexual offenses involving a minor.

The man had pleaded guilty in October 2023 to charges of engaging in sexual intercourse with a girl under the age of 14. The offenses occurred in 2020, when the victim was 13 and the defendant was 21.

Authorities said the pair first met at a neighborhood beauty salon in March 2020. Their contact developed into what the victim viewed as a relationship, leading to three instances of sexual activity that summer. The encounters resulted in the girl’s pregnancy, and she gave birth in 2021.

The victim’s mother was approached by the defendant and his mother, who agreed to take responsibility for the child. However, medical staff alerted police at the time of delivery, prompting an investigation.

In January 2024, Justice Ann-Marie Smith ordered the defendant to pay $6,000 in fines and compensation, structured in $500 monthly installments. Failure to pay carried a six-month prison term as the alternative sentence.

Court officials said the man made only one payment before absconding. After a months-long search, he was arrested in August 2024 and ordered to serve the custodial sentence.
